Sudanese Arm Knife - Late 19th Century

Description

A traditional late 19th Century Mahdi/Ormdurman period arm dagger of Sudanic Africa, a weapon form widely used throughout the region. Although distinct local variations existed, the arm dagger was particularly characteristic of this part of Africa.

Traditionally, the dagger was kept in a sheath attached by a loop to the inside of the left forearm, with the blade pointing toward the elbow and the hilt resting against the inside of the wrist. This position allowed the dagger to be drawn quickly.

Some of the finest examples were made by the Nupe of Northern Nigeria, with sheaths, loops and hilts sometimes worked entirely in decoratively engraved brass. Hausa-made examples could also show Tuareg influence, particularly in hilts formed in the style of the Cross of Agades.

A distinctive example of the varied arm daggers found across Sudanic Africa, combining a practical method of carrying with regional traditions of metalwork and decoration.

Condition: In as-seen condition. A piece of card has been inserted as an internal backing within the scabbard to provide additional strength and support. The cruciform hilt is also missing one of its acorn-shaped terminals.
