Description

A lovely gilt framed portrait on canvas of Walter Holland (1842-1915), director of Lamport & Holt. Signed, inscribed and dated 'J. Horsburgh, Edinburgh, 1910'.

Lamport & Holt Shipping Company

Lamport and Holt began as a sailing ship partnership in the mid-19th century and expanded rapidly by acquiring and building larger vessels. They gradually transitioned from sailing ships to steamships, first by investing in existing operators and later by commissioning their own steam-powered fleet. The company pioneered long-distance trade routes, including services between Liverpool, Brazil, and the River Plate region of South America. They also secured valuable mail contracts and adapted to innovations in marine engineering, such as compound steam engines, increasing efficiency and competitiveness.

Walter Holland

Walter Holland succeeded W.J. Lamport as a partner after Lamport’s death in 1874. Holland had originally been an apprentice under Lamport at Gibbs, Bright & Co. and later became an important figure in the firm’s leadership. His appointment marked a generational transition within Lamport and Holt, continuing the company’s growth and stability after the founder’s death.
Size: 29 x 24in. (74 x 61cm.) Framed and glazed.
