Description

Brig/Sloop Battle Scene, Oil Painting by Donald MacLeod, 75cm x 59cm.

Scene:
On 30 November 1811, HMS Rover captured the French letter-of-marque Comte Regnaud, a vessel armed with ten 18-pounder carronades and four 9-pounder guns. Commanded by M. Abraham Giscard, Comte Regnaud had departed Batavia on 7 August 1811, carrying a valuable cargo of spices, sugar, and coffee, much of which belonged to the French government. The ship was en route to Rochelle when intercepted by Rover.

Upon examination, Comte Regnaud was identified as the former Vincejo, a vessel noted for being "well found in every respect, and sailing remarkably well," according to Commander Justice Finley, captain of the Rover. Despite this, the Royal Navy chose not to recommission her into service.

Prize money for the capture was distributed in January 1813.
