A fabulous late 19th-century oil on canvas painting, inspired by August Friedrich Siegert's 17th-century scene 'Labour of Love'.

Story:
In the pantry room, a maid keeps a careful watch on the dinner party through the open doorway as she discreetly passes food and drink to her lover, the guardsman at her side, unnoticed by the nearby guests and their lord.

Canvas supplied by Aitken Dott, 26 South Castle Street, Edinburgh, post 1876, pre 1890.

Very large sized oil on canvas, 115 x 100 cm; frame, 141 x 126 cm.
