Description

A highly impressive and intricately carved bog oak throne chair features a shaped crest above a back, showcasing two biblical relief panels.

The upper frieze likely depicts St. Paul before King Agrippa (or the Roman governor Festus), illustrating the bearded apostle holding a sword in front of an enthroned ruler, while an elder, seated to the left, grasps a staff. The lower panel portrays The Death of Absalom, with Absalom depicted suspended by his hair in an oak tree as Joab slays him. The chair is further detailed with carved Green Man mask arm terminals, scrolling foliate ornament, turned supports, and block-and-baluster stretchers.

This piece is dated around the 17th century or earlier, although it has undergone alterations in later periods. It was imported from Ireland by family descent.
