Description

A very impressive and heavy carved bog oak throne chair, the shaped crest above a back carved with two biblical relief panels.

The upper frieze is probably carved with St. Paul before King Agrippa (or the Roman governor Festus), depicting the bearded apostle holding a sword before an enthroned ruler, with an elder seated to the left holding a staff. The lower panel depicts The Death of Absalom, showing Absalom suspended by his hair in an oak tree as Joab slays him. The chair is further enriched with carved Green Man mask arm terminals, scrolling foliate ornament, turned supports, and block-and-baluster stretchers.

Circa 17th century or pre although has seen later modifications in subsequent periods.By family decent imported from Ireland.
